Forklift, or fork truck, safety training is not usually learnt through experiences you picked along the way but by training provided along with compliance to safety requirements and other legal requirements that are mandatory in most countries.
Regulation and Requirement
OSHA: OSHA dictates training and certification of all lift truck operators in the United States.
HSE: In the UK, Health and Safety Executives, or HSE, mandates the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) for right training.
These laws are also in place in countries other than the aforementioned.
Types of Forklift Safety Training
Employer-Provided Training
Many companies have initiated in-house training programs that are directed by certified instructors.
Involves classroom learning, practical exercises, and evaluation of traditional components.
Third-Party Training
Forklift safety courses are taught by external training schools or organisations.
These programs lead to certification and actually comply with the laws.
Online and Hybrid Training
Other companies or providers feel the theoretical knowledge can be achieved through online learning, and the competency testing assessment will be done after the face-to-face practical evaluation.
Elements of Training
Classroom Learning: Mechanical Types, Engineering Principles, Procedures of Operating, and Recognising Hazards.
Practical Demonstration: Actual physical learning under the approved instructor.
Test: Theory examination and skills verification.
Certification: It is granted in the form of a card/license, which is valid for a number of years, often three.
ENCOURAGING LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIENCE
Experience can be found to develop proficiencies. But it is beyond any doubt that operating a forklift without any formal education is against safety regulations and is unsafe for most businesses.
